Ekla Chalo Rey (#SoGv2 - 25)
Ekla Chalo Rey (Walk alone)
Good evening!
Tuesday. SoGv2.
So, I am little under the weather and thus can't really think well to be able to write something that could add value to you. Apologies for this. Today, I wanted to write about the idea of trying to get comfortable with self. And not depending on the company of others.
The idea of this one came from the Joe and Naval conversation. That conversation has to be among the most illuminating ever! You HAVE to listen to it. about 2 hours long but it WILL add much more to your life! The fascinating bit is the insights that Naval has. And the other is the ability of Joe to ask questions! Do see it. I also made notes in two parts.
I wanted to start with the quote, "All of humanity's problems stem from man's inability to sit quietly in a room alone."
And then talk about how great men achieve more by virtue of controlling their desires to seek the company of others. I would have talked about various pop-cultural references in this piece. These are...
Ekla Chalo Rey - a song by Rabindranath Tagore
The Man From Earth - a film
In praise of idleness - Bertrand Russell
Silence (the book) - Erling Kagge
Work from Henry David Thoreau
Meditations by Marcus Aurelius
Probably more (I would have done some research)
I would have then spoken about my (limited) understanding of Mindfulness and Meditation and Noble Silence and Samadhi and Sleep.
I would also have taken threads from these pieces and concepts and then driven home the point that we as individuals (that want to do great things) need to be able to get comfortable with being alone (not to be confused with loneliness) and idleness. We ought to seek the company of self over large crowds.
Of course, we need people around us (after all the whole of the human race relies on cooperation and all that) but like all vices (yes, I call people vice), we ought to limit our indulgence and reliance.
I would have ended by giving a few exercises to start getting comfortable with the idea of being alone. For example, I would have asked you to leave your phone at your office / home and go for a walk for 10 minutes or something. And then crank up this 10 to an hour. I would have asked you to take out time to journal your day (and while you did it, cut yourself off from the company of others - TV, family, friends, phone, etc).
Finally, I would have asked you to buddy up with me and help me do these exercises so that I get better at the idea of enjoying my own company.
But, there's always a but!.
But, as luck would have it, I could not. Hope this is enough food for thought. If you guys want, I can try and write this in length and send a special update tomorrow. Lemme know.
And with this, over and out!
Thank you for your time!
With gratitude,
@saurabh

Please note that with SoGv2, I have split my letters in three (you get first two by default)...
SoGv2. Sent every Tuesday and Thursday. I am thinking if I want to send these once a week only. What do you think? In each SoGv2, I try to touch upon a thing that I believe can make us better. By standing on the shoulder of giants.
#5onFriday. Weekend read. A weekly compendium of the best of what I saw, what I read, what I recommend. Has things from various disciplines that I am interested in - sports, poker, crypto, travel, fashion, films, writing, events, branding, Apple, entrepreneurship, philosophy, futurism, investing, wisdom, longevity and a million other things.
#1KWAD. Sent on other 4 days of the week. Things that I'd rather put on my personal blog. Sent to only those who choose to subscribe. You will have to explicitly tell me to add you to this list (hit reply).
You can, of course, unsubscribe at any time you like.
